Digital Bazaar and the RIAA and MPAA

No, we don't - not that the entertainment industry hasn't given the world a good reason to not like them. Bitmunk is an attempt to help the RIAA/MPAA come to grips with real digital media distribution. We don't agree with what they've been doing, but think that they're warming up to the idea of working with the artists and distributors on a more level playing field. They're in a pretty tough spot right now and we're trying to help them out while being fair to artists, sellers and you. We believe that:

  • All talented artists should be able to make a living from their art.
  • Record labels, publishers and distributors play a very important role in helping an artist achieve their goals.
  • You shouldn't be restricted in how you use something that you own (music, movies, television episodes, etc) as long as you are not preventing the artist from making money.

We definitely don't agree with the RIAA and MPAA's current strategy for dealing with file trading, nor their drive to Digitally Rights Manage everything that they manufacture. We believe they are slightly mis-guided at the moment, mainly because there hasn't been a service like Bitmunk to show them that it is possible to partner with their customers to provide a service that benefits everybody.
